The building comprises of a research lab, libraries, museums, conference hall, lecture halls, mini audiovisual auditorium and an administrative unit. The foundation stone was laid by His Royal Highness The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh , International President, World Wide Fund for Nature. Phase I was inaugurated by University Grant's Commission chairperson Ms. Almatai Desai on the 12th of November 1998.
Special Feature :
The entire building is done in White Gokak stone and the effect given is as though the building emerges from green contoured ground. Since it is an environment building minimum use of wood is made.
Extensive use of stone, furniture is made, like sitting arrangements, table stands, shelving.The natural principles of cooling are used by allowing the air to be blown through water fountains and water bodies and circulating into the buildings to keep them naturally cool. The natural cooling system has been used for audiovisual auditorium.
